最冷的 winter I ever experienced was 春天 2002 in 圣人云. 那 老 joke may have been an exaggeration, but May 2002 continued the c老 weather of the previous two months. According to the statistics from the 圣人云 Regional Airport, the average May temperature was 51.5 degrees, more than 5 degrees below 正常的. This temperature tied May 1983 for the 13th c老est May in the 122 years of 圣人云 气象记录. May 2002 was the c老est May since May 1997, the 第十 c老est May on record with an average temperature of 51.1度. 最冷的 May of all time was in 1907 with an average temperature of 47.1度.
The c老 conditions in May were dominated by the period from May 1 through 5月21日. During this period, only May 15 had an above 正常的 average temperature. This below 正常的 streak actually began on April 24. 因此, 圣人云 endured a period of21 consecutive days with a below 正常的 temperature, the second longest such streak during the past 14 years. The longest previous recent streak 是23 consecutive days from December 10, 2000 through January 2, 2001. In all, 26 of the 27 days between April 24 and 5月21日 had below 正常的 temperatures. Amazingly during this period, there were no records set or tied for daily c老est low temperature, high temperature, or mean temperature. The c老 weather did produce what appears to be a late final frost of the growing season. This took place on May 20, which was 10 days late. There were 5 days with a below freezing low, nearly double the 正常的 amount, but not extraordinary again.
The c老 May helped to produce an average spring (March 1-May 31) temperature of 37.4 degrees in 圣人云. This temperature, which is 5.5 degrees below 正常的, makes 春天 2002 the c老est 春天 since 1950 and the fourth c老est spring on record. 最冷的 spring ever occurred in 1888 with an average temperature of 34.4度(见 下表).
This c老 spring, following the warmest November-February period on record, is 非常不寻常. Of the previous 10 warmest winters, 7 years had springs that were at least one degree above 正常的, 包括第三个, 7th, 11th, and 12th warmest springs on record. Two warm winters were followed by near 正常的 springs. Only the spring of 1932, with an average spring temperature that was about 2 degrees below 正常的, produced a c老 spring following one of the 10 warmest winters on record. The 2001-2002 season is the only year in which one of the 10 warmest winters (#1) was followed by one of the 10 c老est springs (see table below).
May rainfall seemed like a lot, but ended up being below 正常的. The total May rainfall 是2.06英寸，0.88 inches below 正常的. May 2002 was the first May in 5 years with below 正常降雨. The month began rainy with measurable rain during 6 of the first 15 days of May. However, May ended up having only 10 days with measurable rainfall, which is 正常的 for the month.
Despite no May snowfall (at least it wasn’t THAT c老), 春天 2002 is the third snowiest spring in 圣人云 records. The spring total of 35.1 inches is the heaviest amount since 1965. 那 spring included the heaviest snow month in 圣人云 history when 51.7英寸的落差 1965年3月. Much like this year, the 1964-1965 snow season had below 正常的 snowfall until March, but still h老s the record for the most snow in a season with 87.9英寸.
The 2001-2002 c老 season snowfall totaled 64.0 inches, the most snow since the 64.9英寸 of 1993-1994. The 2001-2002 snowfall was 18.5 inches above 正常的 and the 11th snowiest year of the 95 years in 圣人云 snowfall records.
